When I was in middle school one of my favorite books was Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose. The book, which was later adapted into a TV series, focuses on the lives of soldiers of a single airborne infantry company during World War II.

Geography of Papua New Guinea: The Most Interesting Country in the World?

The country makes up less than 1% of the world's land mass yet is home to nearly 12% of the world’s languages and contains over 5% of the world's plant and animal species. The Map that made the US-Mexico Border

This…is one of the most important maps in US and Mexican history. It’s the map used to negotiate the border between the two countries to end the Mexican-American war in 1848, including Texas it transferred over half of Mexico’s land to the US. But it wasn’t a clean-cut deal. The map had some serious errors and the US quickly wanted more land…nearly bringing to two countries to back to war. Rare...

Not true, Germany, didn't exist. If you're talking about German speakers then why don't you include Austrians. It's like Italians today claiming Galileo, Michelangelo and others as Italian, Italy didn't exist at that time and those people did not see themselves as Italians or Germans German speaking States resisted the Prussians add for good reason. Just like today northern Italians don't considered themselves to be Italians. If you really want to look at the largest groups of people you could say the people of the British Isles who were actually living under 1 political identity at the time. The English 47 million the Irish 38 million the Scott's 12 million the Welsh 2 million combined come to a grand total of 98 million, but it's really a lot of b*******. Probably the American soldiers saw themselves as white supremacists just like the Germans and racism was prevalent in the United States and kinda still is. It's not like the French were not hard-working, it's not like the Dutch or the Belgians were not hard-working or Swedes and the Norwegians and the Danes were not hard-working and all mostly middle class, The distinguishing Factor at that was the Germans were a breed of racist white supremacist bastards, the German Nazi party essentially copied the American manifest Destiny and eugenics doctrines to remove the inferiors and replaced them with superiors, Most, not all US soldiers we're also and that was also reflected in American society at the time. Don't sugarcoat it, they Americans were not as Tom Brokaw bestowed upon the American nation "the greatest generation". It wasn't then and it still isn't now.

Lolwhat? 1. Nationalism is a modern construct. While there’s some sentiment for a separate Northern Italian state and identity? It doesn’t seem all that popular. By the way? Countless people in other countries claim historical figures that resided in their modern borders. Take Japanese and Chinese history for example. There’s countless examples of people who identified with their regional identity or their local lord versus a national identity. While there were Japanese and Chinese emperors, their polities weren’t a monolith much like most of their counterparts in the West. Especially in the Sengoku “Warring States” period where the Japanese Emperor like in most of Japan’s history was a mere figurehead. Even more “centralized” people like the Kingdom of France had countless identities, languages, dialects and people. I’d love to see you claim Japan and China were ethnic or cultural monoliths. By this bigoted logic? Italians who aren’t directly descended from Romans can’t even be proud. Much less any given person who immigrates and integrates into their new country. All this talk about not being racist or xenophobic and you resort to using bigotry to justify this argument. 2. While I agree that Italians and Germans didn’t exactly exist as a singular identity, it feels honestly reductive to apply this to the Italians. Given that even if certain regions weren’t united politically? There was still the Papal States, which were effectively a de facto Italian state as well as the Kingdom of Italy that existed from the early Middle Ages to modernity, even if it was a mere title owned by the HRE after the Ostrogoths and Lombards ran the peninsula. If anything? There wasn’t really a sense of German identity until the 14th or 15th century, when HRE emperors began to consider themselves and their kingdom not just a continuation of Rome. The big red herring to this argument is the fact that historians consider Ancient Greece, which had a similar fractured situation as the Italian city states, as a whole. Regionalism isn’t some new thing. 3. The UK is a different situation because the four different peoples have distinct identities. A close comparison would be Ancient Rome, Persia or even China. Granted? Not many think China as anything but a homogeneous whole when several ethnicities comprise China even today. It’s why the CCP is so desperate at eroding these cultural identities through cultural genocide. But it’s wrong because China isn’t exactly some monolith as it was ruled by several ethnicities and dynasties over the last two millennia. But to bring it back in? The homogenous China is just a fabrication. But to use the UK as an example for the Italians of all people to lack a cohesive identity is hilarious because it’s an apple compared to a grapefruit, cucumber, tomato and pumpkin taped together with scotch tape. China has broken apart and reunited so many times. 4. The entire rant listing Western Europeans in some sort of manner that makes little sense was just hilarious. Every part of the West, like everywhere else on the planet, has blood on their hands and skulls in their closets. Arguing that only certain groups do so is childish thinking. Also hilarious is how those three groups are among the most offensive in terms of their racist crimes against the countries they colonized in the 19th century. Belgium literally had a statue to a war criminal monarch that chopped Congolese people’s hands off and singularly defined genocide in the modern sense. The French helped carve Africa and the Middle East into the hell it is now , and their policies in Western Africa and their overseas territories today leave much to be desired. Especially with one overseas territory daring to desire independence. And the Dutch had their issues in terms of Indonesia. Very interesting how you go about about racism and bigotry, then arbitrarily label all German people as racist dogs. Even if a small portion of that group is racist today, you’re not better than that minority of bigots. It’s this belief which caused Americans of German descent to lose their language due to xenophobia in WWI ,unconstitutional Japanese/Italian/German internment in WWII, racist sentiments against Arabs after 9/11 and xenophobic bashing of Russians in the current time. No one is special in cruelty. 5. Eugenics and similar thoughts were unfortunately widespread in much of the West, regardless of their ethnicity. I consider that a stain. 6. Where’s your proof that American soldiers “probably” seen themselves as white supremacists though? That seems like an extremely loaded statement. How can you explain why societal support for Civil Rights came from those “racist” white Americans you seem to want to tar and feather. I won’t doubt that some were racist, but to pretend that nonwhite people gotten equal rights and black people had their chains cast off magically with their own hands is such racist and ahistorical drivel. Because it contradicts whatever nonsense you’re spouting. 7. If Americans as a whole were so virulently racist, then it should’ve been far harder for nonwhite people to integrate into this country than it was and now. I’m not arguing against racism being prevalent in the past because that would be a lie. And saying that racism is prevalent today is a lie, which I’m guessing in your bigoted eyes is solely done by white people , because there’s such a short supply of racist incidents and sentiment that some racist nonwhite people (since racism and bigotry doesn’t know skin color) to regularly fake hate crimes in order to justify the grifting. Or in the last twenty years, cynically used as a blanket defense against genuine criticism of governments such as the CCP or the Japanese right wing’s nationalist sentiments, nonwhite politicians and professionals, etc. The KKK is mostly comprised with feds and the only sort of racism that really exists is maintained by grifters as in the Al Sharpton or Rachel Dolezal types who would have to get real jobs if those useful idiots weren’t used by the rich to divide and conquer people. 8. The Greatest Generation are called that despite all the struggles they faced? They led the United States to prosperity and the world largely to peace. It’s kind of the reason why there aren’t many more wars like there were in the last two centuries. Not saying the world was conflict free or that it was a perfect utopia , but it could’ve been far much worse if they didn’t step in and take the reins. We’d probably be in WWV by now if there wasn’t a breakout of nuclear war and wiped everything out. So many conflicts could’ve happened if there weren’t some overarching force to make sure squabbles didn’t turn into war. Doesn’t mean I approve of the unnecessary wars since then by far for some dumb ideological reason , propping up some despot for a dying colonial power or greed.

One of the saddest and most depraved anti-German acts in the US during WWI was that some “patriotic” idiots killed Dachshunds. More proof that “patriotism” is nationalism… and nationalism breeds ignorance, prejudice, bigotry & stupidity. We are seeing this now in present day US w/ that cult in those silly red hats.

A fallacy many humans have is believing a country's citizens are the same as that country's government. Look at us in the U.S. Half trust big government to take our taxes, create programs, make our lives better, the other half says they don't trust the government to do as good with our tax money as we can do in the marketplace. Anyway, just because "Germany" was destroying much of Europe doesn't mean the German population were behind it. Just like China is provoking many countries and committing genocide of the Uieghers - that doesn't mean Chinese citizens have any say or part in that. Governments that are totalitarian and tyrannical don't usually represent their citizens, they just speak for them. I've learned about some horrific things the 3rd Reich put its citizens through to comply. I feel bad for them and what they went through, whereas I'd personally kill Hitler if I had that opportunity.
